In order to meet the energy needs of the island of Crete, Crete Valley is spearheading significant renewable energy initiatives across different regions, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable development and community engagement. At different sites, Community Energy Labs (CELs) have been established, each varying in its geography and energy requirements. Each of these CELs will rely on a different renewable energy source. Recently, the project team visited each of these sites to meet with stakeholders, talk to locals and explore the location.
In Arkalochori a biomass plant utilising local olive tree prunings, wind turbines, and solar panels will be set up. These efforts aim to significantly reduce local energy costs and dependence on oil-based systems.
Over in the Lasithi Plateau, Crete Valley a supplementary biogas unit will be set up to be able to provide energy for an additional 20 households. This initiative will cut costs for households by half. Five small electric windmills will also be installed.
In Arvi, photovoltaics together with a geo-exchange system using seawater will take care of the heating and cooling needs while reducing electricity consumption for these purposes.
Through all these visits, community engagement remained front and center, as one of the project's aims is to generate a social innovation model for greater community participation.
