Transforming Urban Energy: How Germany’s Smart District is Supporting the Grid
Europe’s energy future depends not only on producing more renewable power but also on making cities and buildings intelligent, flexible participants in the grid. In Karlsruhe, Germany, this vision is becoming a reality through the WeForming project, which is transforming a 124,000 m² mixed-use district into a pioneering Smart Energy Hub.
The district—home to nine buildings serving more than 200 tenants—aims to integrate electricity, heating, and mobility systems to operate as one coordinated energy ecosystem. The goal: to enhance efficiency, grid stability, and sustainability.
At the core of this transformation is the concept of Intelligent Grid-Forming Buildings (iGFBs), where local assets like batteries and electric vehicles work together to support the grid. Five key innovations drive the German demonstrator:
- Electric Vehicles as Energy Assets – 26 EV charging points enable bidirectional charging, allowing cars to both draw and supply energy, reducing costs and storage needs.
- Real-Time Grid Support – A Real-Time Controller enables buildings to respond instantly to grid fluctuations, a task once reserved for large power plants.
- Coordinated Market Participation – A Coordination Algorithm bundles multiple energy assets so they can trade services, such as frequency balancing, on the energy market.
- AI-Powered Forecasting – Machine learning predicts consumption and solar generation, optimising when to charge or discharge batteries.
- The WeForming Middleware – A unified digital marketplace connects energy providers, service operators, and asset owners, making energy services accessible and interoperable across Europe.
The project is now preparing for full-scale deployment, moving from lab testing to real-world operation in the Karlsruhe district.
