In WeForming, flexibility goes far beyond adjusting electricity consumption. It is about transforming buildings into Intelligent Grid-Forming Buildings (iGFBs) that actively interact with the grid and energy markets. These buildings dynamically align their energy use with system needs through grid signals, modulating demand, prioritizing self-consumption, or injecting stored energy all while maintaining comfort and indoor environmental quality.
Flexibility is delivered through a diverse portfolio of distributed energy assets, orchestrated by AI-enabled Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) and advanced digital control layers. These include rooftop PV systems, behind-the-meter batteries (including second-life batteries), thermal storage, EV chargers, HVAC systems, adaptive lighting, and forecasting engines. Together, they enable services such as load shifting, peak shaving, curtailment, and even participation in ancillary markets like Frequency Containment Reserves (FCR).
WeForming validates its approach across six highly diverse demonstrators in Portugal, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Croatia. From shopping malls and residential districts to rural energy communities and island systems, the project ensures that its solutions are scalable and adaptable to Europe’s varied building stock and regulatory environments.
Beyond technology, the project actively engages users and building operators through co-creation strategies and new business models that enhance financial incentives. At the policy level, WeForming contributes to improving the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), advancing interoperability standards aligned with EU Data Spaces, and developing digital twins for flexibility forecasting.
By combining technology, market integration, and policy alignment, WeForming demonstrates that buildings can become key actors in a decentralised, resilient, and consumer-driven energy system, not just passive energy consumers.
