Our latest joint Policy Brief -developed by Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) in collaboration with the WeForming and META BUILD Horizon Europe Project consortiums - combines real-world evidence from 19 pilot sites across Europe to outline what is holding smart buildings back!
The technology is ready, but national regulation is playing catch-up.
Out of six WeForming field demonstrators, four required explicit regulatory exemptions just to operate!
4 Policy prorities for EU Members:
- Accelerate Smart Meter Rollouts: Prioritise connections with
flexible loads (heat pumps, EV chargers, and battery storage) with access
to near-real-time data. - Tax Electricity Fairly: Rebalance taxes and
levies so electricity is no longer penalised over fossil gas. - Mandate Open Interoperability Standards: Promote EU-wide non-proprietary
data models to connect buildings seamlessly with local grids. - MakeRules Work in Practice: Establish functional settlement rules for energy
communities and independent aggregators so active buildings can actually
trade their flexibility.
